FAQ

Q: How long has DRT Group been in business of recovering data?
A: DRT Group has focused exclusively on providing comprehensive data recovery and restoration services for all types of data storage media in virtually every operating environment. Recovering data has been our only service since our inception in 1989.

Q: Who is a typical client for Data Recovery Technology?
A: We provide data recovery and restoration services for individual, business, education and government users throughout the US and the world.

Q. What is data recovery?
A. Data recovery is the process of salvaging data from damaged, failed, corrupted or inaccessible primary storage media when it cannot be accessed normally. Often the data is being salvaged from storage media formats such as hard disk drives, storage tapes, CDs, DVDs, RAID, Memory cards and other electronics. This can be due to physical damage to the storage device or logical damage to the file system that prevents it from being mounted by the host operating system.

Q: What types of data storage media can be recovered by DRT Group?
A: We can recover data from any storage device: individual hard drives, multiple hard disk sets (RAID, SAN, NAS), removable disk cartridges, diskettes, tape media, CD, DVD, re-writeable and write-once (WORM) optical cartridges, ZIP disks, USB flash drives, and digital data memory cards.

Q: What operating systems does DRT Group provide services for?
A: We support Windows, DOS, Mac OS, Netware, Linux and Unix, as well as many other proprietary operating environments.

Q. Can all lost data be retrieved?
A. There are occasions when damage to the data is permanent and a complete recovery is not possible. However, it is rare that absolutely no data is retrievable.

Q. What should I do when I experience data loss?
A. If your drive is making unusual noises or showing other obvious signs of distress, shut it down immediately and do not power it up again.

  • Calmly assess the situation. Verify the possible causes, such as loose cables or bad device drivers.
  • Write down all symptoms of failure and all recent users’ activities involving your computer.
  • If you determine physical damage to be the cause of your lost data, avoid do-it-yourself solutions. Do-it-yourself software could potentially cause complete failure and further data loss.
  • Contact DRT Group to understand your options for professional in-lab recovery services.

Q. How can I prevent further loss of data?
A. To avoid further damage to your media and prevent extended data loss:

  • Do not perform any operation on the storage device that will cause physical damage to the device or the data on it
  • Do not write to any of the files on the device or add additional files
  • Do not format the drive
  • Do not modify the partitions on the drive (using FDISK or any other partitioning software)
  • Do not try to open the device to see what is wrong
  • Stop using the hard drive or storage device that requires recovery
  • Contact us for additional advice

Q: What is the process for starting a data recovery project?
A: Most data recovery projects begin with a toll-free call to DRT Group at 1-888-511-DATA (888-511-3282 US & Canada). We discuss the problem to understand the circumstances leading to the data loss and to help determine the best course of action.

Q: Can damaged media be brought to DRT Group, instead of being shipped?
A: Yes. DRT Group is centrally located in San Jose, California, a one-hour drive South of San Francisco and just one-hour drive North of Salinas, and 20-30 minutes from other Silicon Valley’s cities. Easy-to-follow Interactive map and directions can be found on our website.

Q: How should a hard drive or other storage device is packaged for shipment?
A: When shipping media for data recovery, it should be placed in an anti-static bag whenever possible. When shipping a hard disk drive, the best packaging to use is the actual hard drive box from the manufacturer. If this is not available, the next best approach is to wrap the hard drive securely in "bubble" wrap or other cushioning material. Ensure that the device is not able to move around within the box. Enclose any documents within and seal the box securely.

Q. What is the turnaround time for data recovery?
Turnaround time can vary with each project, based on the extent of the damage and the time needed to perform the recovery. Many recovery projects are completed within 24 to 72 hours. Data recovery cases can be expedited during regular business hours. We also offer a Critical Response Service that will work on your case around the clock 24/7 for your urgency with additional charge of $500.

Q: How is recovered data returned to me?
A: Data is returned on the media that you prefer and in the format of your choice.

Q. What is the cost of data recovery service?
A. DRT Group views each recovery case as unique. The price of any case ranges from $300 and up, and the price is generally determined by three main factors:

  • The cost of components
  • The total lab time spent on the case and the degree of work performed by technicians
  • The type of storage device that has failed and the nature of that failure

DRT Group has a strict free evaluation policy “No Data – No Charge”. If the data is unrecoverable due to severe media damage, you won’t be charged any fee at all.

Q. What is the evaluation process and how long will it take?
A. Once we receive your media, our team of highly experienced technicians will determine the extent of your media’s damage and data loss within 2-4 hours. During the evaluation process, we will determine how to perform the recovery of your lost data in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible. We are committed to getting your data back and providing you with firm timeframes and costs.

Q. What are the payment options?
A. Payment is due in full upon completion of your successful recovery, prior to release of data. We accept bank transfers, VISA, MasterCard and American Express. In the US, we also welcome company checks.
